Police claim arrest of two TTP suspects in Karachi

KARACHI: Two suspects belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have been arrested by police in a joint raid conducted with Rangers personnel in Sohrab Goth's Janjal Goth locality in Karachi.


Sohrab Goth DSP Qamar Ahmed said that the arrested suspects, who were identified as Azeem Mehsud and Munawwar Mehsud. belonged to a 50-member gang which was involved in terror activities and collecting funds for the TTP.

He further said that Azeem Mehsud is the father of Dawood Mehsud who was the Karachi chief of the TTP and the personal guard of ex-TTP supremo Hakimullah Mehsud.

The arrested suspects were wanted for involvement in several incidents of terrorism, target killings and attacks on Rangers and police personnel, including the Sept 2011 attack on the residence of slain SSP Chaudhry Aslam.

DSP Qamar Ahmed also claimed that looted cash, arms and ammunition were also recovered from the arrested men.

A joint grand targeted operation was launched in Karachi amidst great fanfare in September 2013 in the hopes of improving the law and order situation in the country’s commercial capital.
